Biography

He came from the German nobles of the city of Delenburg and was born in 1746.

Originally served in Germany , and in 1772, with the rank of major, he transferred to Russian service. On March 13, 1773, Eckeln was promoted to captain with the appointment of a division quartermaster at the General Staff.

During the Turkish campaign of 1773, Eckeln was in the troops of Count Rumyantsev , on June 11 he participated in the crossing of the main army intended for the occupation of Silistra across the Danube at Gurobal, on June 18 was in a battle near Silistria, then he went to the troops of Lieutenant General Ungern-Sternberg Ishmael went to winter apartments and stayed in the city until the conclusion of the Kuchuk-Kainardzhiysky peace (July 15, 1774).

At the end of the war, Eckeln returned to St. Petersburg and was under the command of the General Staff, where on June 20, 1777 he was appointed divisional chief quartermaster. Two years later, on October 29, 1779, Eckeln was granted the rank of lieutenant colonel and in this rank he was sent on January 1, 1782 with Lieutenant General F.V. Bauer to Kronstadt to oversee the construction of the Kronstadt stone harbor, where he was under the command of the admiral Greig on May 4, 1783. Then he was appointed by personal order to the retinue of the Prince of Württemberg and was sent to Kherson , but on his return to Petersburg on September 19 of the same year he was at the first division. September 22, 1785, in reward for supervision of the construction of the stone harbor in Kronstadt, Eckeln was granted the Order of St. Vladimir 4th degree.

On May 7, 1786 he was transferred to the first battalion of the Finnish Jäger Corps. During the Russian-Swedish war of 1788, Eckeln was in the vanguard corps of Lieutenant General Michelson and on July 27 participated in the battle at the village of Utti, and then commanded a chain of troops located against the enemy’s border. April 20, 1789 Eckeln was promoted to colonel, with the transfer to the Nasheburg infantry regiment . November 26, 1792 he was granted the Order of St. George 4th degree (No. 937 according to the list of Grigorovich - Stepanov, No. 511 according to the list of Sudravsky)

 For the brave and courageous feats given in 789 in many battles, and especially on June 14 at Kouval and when crossing the Kumen river 

In 1794, under the command of Prince C. F. Golitsyn, Eckeln participated in the suppression of Polish rebels in Lithuania and Courland ; On June 4, he defeated the Polish general Prozori near the city of Birzek, then, commanding the vanguard, drove out the advanced enemy troops at the village of Letv, the Yanishkel manor, and on July 20 destroyed the numerous rebel corps under the command of generals Gedrovich, Gelgud, Bistrom and the foreman Selistrovsky, at the village of Salatat that on September 15 was granted the Order of St. Vladimir 3rd degree.

On October 3, 1793, Eckeln swore allegiance to Russia under the Nasheburg musketeer regiment, in which he was promoted to foreman on November 24, 1794; after 2 years, January 3, 1796, he was transferred to the Voronezh Musketeer Regiment ; On January 27, 1797 he was appointed major general, and on September 17, 1798 he was promoted to lieutenant general.

On January 29, 1799, due to the regiment's failure to bring the regiment to the position required by the charter for 2 years, Eckeln was expelled from service, but on November 24, 1800 he was again accepted and appointed to be in the army. December 3, 1800 Eckeln was appointed to the place of Dolgorukov commander of the Tula arms factories. Upon accession to the throne of Alexander I, Eckeln, after the coronation, introduced the sovereign to selected gunsmiths with an offering of excellent finishes for weapons and steel items, for which he was blessed with an all-merciful rescript. Thanks to Ekeln’s concerns, a new two-story stone house was built in Tula for factory commanders and a special committee was established under his chairmanship to discuss factory affairs. In November 1803, he was dismissed from directorship. Eckeln died in June 1804.
