Group History
Start
The Mann-Hugg Blues Brothers (that was the band's first name) formed in London in December 1962 and found themselves at the epicenter of the club blues revolution alongside future rivals, The Rolling Stones and The Yardbirds . The first line-up was played by keyboardist Manfred Mann , drummer Mike Hugg , guitarist Mike Vickers, bass player Dave Richmond and vocalist Paul Jones , who began Alexis Corner in the band (along with Long John Boldry and Mick Jagger ).
In March 1963, the group signed a contract with HMV Records , changed its name to Manfred Mann, and in July debuted with the instrumental single “Why Should We Not?”, Followed by the (already vocal-instrumental) “Cock-A-Hoop” [3] .
The main period of creativity
The first success for the band Manfred Mann came in 1964 , when the single “5-4-3-2-1” (originally recorded by the order of the television program “Ready Steady Go!”, Which was looking for a new soundtrack) rose in Britain to the 5th places [1] . Soon Richmond was replaced by Tom McGuinness. The group multiplied their success with the following two singles: “Hubble Bubble (Toil And Trouble)” and “Do Wah Diddy Diddy” (cover version of The Exciters ); the second of them led the charts of England and the USA. [1] In September 1964, the first long-playing disc, The Five Faces of Manfred Mann , was positively received by critics and reached # 3 in the UK Albums Chart and # 141 in the Billboard 200 [4] [5] .
As their chart positions strengthened, Manfred Mann moved away from the blues sound: now they played pop rock with a soul flavor. During this period, Jack Bruce becomes a member of the group for a short time, while he was known only for his performances with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers . The second album of Mann Made (October 1965) was also released with him, which also received good reviews from critics.
Following the success of the single “If You Gotta Go, Go Now” (# 2 UK), Paul Jones announced a decision to begin a solo career. In the same year, he starred in the 1967 film Privilege , directed by Peter Watkins , who is considered a cult classic [2] [~ 1] . Jones was replaced by vocalist Mike D'Abo . Shortly after the release of Pretty Flamingo (the next English chart topper), Bruce left for Cream . Klaus Forman took his place (remaining in history, mainly due to later collaboration with The Beatles ), and McGuinness switched to guitar. At the same time, the group switched to Fontana Records .
With the arrival of D'Abo, the group softened the sound, but at the same time “sharpened the pen”: the lyrics became more interesting, they even began to compare them with Dylan's poetry. Covers of Dilan songs began appearing in the repertoire: Just Like a Woman (the first single on Fontana ) was followed by the single Mighty Quinn , which reached No. 1 in the UK singles chart (February 17, 1968) [1] . In this composition, the third British album As Is (1966) was recorded. It was followed by the soundtrack to the movie “Up the Junction” (the fourth British album of the group, February 1968) and the last, fifth album of Mighty Garvey! (June 1968), which included the hits “Mighty Quinn” and “Ha! Ha! Said The Clown. " However, disappointed with the relative failure of long-playing albums and not wanting to remain exclusively “hit-makers”, Manfred Mann in 1969 announced the breakup [3] .
After the collapse
For some time, Mann wrote advertising jingles, then formed the experimental jazz rock band Manfred Mann Chapter Three (with Mike Hugg), which released two albums. In 1971, he assembled a new band, Manfred Mann's Earth Band , the first line-up of which included singing guitarist Mick Rogers , bass guitarist Colin Pattenden and drummer Chris Slade . With this group, Mann realized his wildest artistic ambitions, and also visited the top of Billboard's lists (single “ Blinded by the Light ”, 1977).
The Manfreds arose in the 1990s: it included members of the 1960s Manfred Mann without Manfred Mann himself. The composition, which was alternately led by Paul Jones and Mike D'Abo, performed hits of the 1960s, interspersed with jazz compositions. In addition, Paul Jones and Tom McGuinness (from 1970-1975 speaking with his group, McGuinness Flint ), since 1978, have been the creative core of The Blues Band .
