Basketball at the 1988 Summer Olympics

USSR men's basketball team in opposition to the US national team at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul ( Arvydas Sabonis - No. 11 vs. Danny Manning - No. 13)

The basketball tournament at the XXIV Summer Olympics was the thirteenth in a row (including demonstrations) at the Summer Olympics. One set of awards was awarded to men and women. Among the men, the USSR team achieved a landslide victory, passing in the semifinals of the Americans (bronze medalists) and defeating Yugoslavia in the final. But the US women's team in the semifinals got the better of the USSR (by the way, also bronze medalists) and in the final beat the same Yugoslavs.

Men

The USSR national team began the tournament with a game with the national team of Yugoslavia. The match was played outright, but the main point in the game was the appearance on the site of Sabonis (he played the game almost without substitutions), who was treated for almost 1.5 years from a serious injury (rupture of the Achilles tendon).

The team won the subsequent games, but not without luck. The match with Puerto Rico in the main time ended with free throws of the opponent, but they were blurred. In overtime, the USSR national team did not provide such chances to the enemy.

Playoffs

Taking second place in the group, the USSR team reached the quarter finals for the Brazilians, whose striking force was Oscar Schmidt . It was not possible to deal directly with him: in the open basketball that started from the very first minutes, Schmidt scored 46 points. However, due to the longer bench and the collective game, the Soviet team finally seized the initiative. The remaining Brazilians failed to support their tired leader.

The match [1] USSR-USA was the first game after the final of the Munich Olympics between these teams. The US team was preparing to revenge for the defeat in 1972.

According to Šarūnas Marciulionis , the game plan was as follows: “When the Americans started to put pressure, we kicked the ball with the help of Sabonis . It was impossible to allow the opponent to organize quick breaks and especially to score from above. When Americans get this opportunity, they seem to have wings growing. In a positional attack, the defenders either pulled opponents to themselves and gave a pass under the ring, or threw the ball back for a throw to snipers freed from guardianship. ” [2]

All players admitted that the team’s game was a success: Kurtinaitis played well, Sabonis was excellent in defense, who closed Admiral Robinson , and Volkov completely turned Manning out of the game. However, the victory of the USSR national team was sensational. Marchiulionis later admitted: “If we played with the Americans another 10 matches, in most of them they would probably have lost.” [2]

According to most players, after the victory of the USSR national team, the Yugoslavs felt the triumphant mood of the USSR national team and as a result they broke down primarily psychologically. [3]

However, the start of the match remained with the Yugoslavs. The USSR national team was unable to establish a game on the defensive and overcome the zone defense of the enemy: in the 4th minute, she lost with a score of 0: 6, in the 9th - 10:20, in the 12th - 12:24. But after this difficult stretch, the USSR national team gathered and gave Sabonis a 5-minute stretch - 12: 0. Thanks to the accurate shots of Rimas Kurtinaitis, the USSR team left the leader for a break and in the second half did not miss the initiative.

After the break (by the 26th minute), the gap reached 10 points, and the Yugoslavs were already psychologically confused.
