Biography
She was born in a fisherman's family (father - Adam Tulin, mother - Nanna Larsson) in the city of Solleftea (flax Westernorrland , province of Ongermanland , Northern Sweden ). In her youth she studied ballet, and in 1948 she graduated from the acting school at the Stockholm Royal Drama Theater.
Since the mid-50s, she played in the theater, where she performed many diverse roles of the classical and modern repertoire. Noteworthy is the work of Thulin in the “ Per Gynt ” by G. Ibsen , staged by Ingmar Bergman in the Stockholm Dramaten, as well as their joint work in the theater of the city of Malmö .
In the movie, Tulin made her debut in 1948 . Of the early works, the role in the film “Judge” by the classic of Swedish cinema Alfa Schöberg is noteworthy. In the 1950s and 1980s, she played the main and secondary roles in more than 70 film and television films of a wide variety of genres: from melodramas to horror films.
She has worked with directors Luchino Visconti , Alf Sheberg , Hans Abramson , Giuliano Montaldo , Oke Oberg , Rolf Hasberg , Sheldon Reynolds , Ingve Gamlin , Tony de Gregorio , Mauro Bologini , Alain Renéreux Frangoirem , Frangieu Fergereu Gianergomere Marie Frangieu Ferriere Frangerom , Nicolas Gessner .
A special place in the creative fate of the actress is occupied by work in the author's cinema of the Swedish director Ingmar Bergman, in whom she, from 1957 to 1983, starred in nine films. In 1957, Bergman invited Tulin to a central female role in the film Strawberry Glade . The actress creates the image of Marianne Borg - the daughter-in-law of the protagonist, an elderly professor of Borg, who felt the approach of death. Further joint work by Bergman and Tulin is associated with the films “ At the Origins of Life ”, “ Face ”, “ Communion ”, “ Silence ”, “ Ritual ”, “ Whispers and Cries ”, and later “ After Rehearsal ”. In Bergman’s films, Tulin develops a series of complex female characters: self-destructive and mentally forked, exposing the contradictions of conscious and emotional, cold rationalism and seething inner passions. In the paintings of the famous director Tulin, tragic and fatal, but at the same time, very human and vulnerable images are taken. Bergman himself in the book "Pictures" described one of her characters [4] :
Woman Thea (Ingrid Tulin), it seems to me, is a semi-conscious attempt to reflect my own intuition. She has no face, she does not know how old she is, she is compliant, feels the need to like. Subject to sudden impulses, communicates with god, angels and demons, believes that she is a saint, tries to pretend to be stigmatized, sensitive to the limit, even touching her clothes on her skin sometimes causes her pain. It carries neither a constructive nor a destructive principle. It is a parabolic antenna for receiving mysterious signals from otherworldly transmitters.
Participation in Bergman's key films makes Ingrid Thulin one of the most intriguing stars of European intellectual cinema. In 1958, at the International Cannes Film Festival, together with Eva Dalbeck , Bibi Andersson and Barbra Yurt af Urnes, the actress receives an award for Best Actress in the film "On the Threshold of Life . "
In the 70s, the "Bergman" period in the work and life of Ingrid Tulin was replaced by the "Italian". Having settled in this country, the actress significantly expands her creative range, starring in famous, and sometimes quite scandalous directors. During these years, Tulin, remaining faithful to European intellectual cinema, turns to gaming commercial tapes, including brutal-erotic ones, such as the Tinto Brass tape “ Kitty Salon ”.
In the late 1980s, being already sixty, Tulin starred in Marco Ferreri's “ House of Smiles ”, where her heroine, in her declining years, was experiencing an unexpected love interest. After this film, Ingrid Tulin finally departs from acting.
In 1965, the actress made her debut as a director. In collaboration with A. Edvall she removes the short film " Prayer ". Then, in 1978, together with E. Yousefson and S. Nyukvistom , Tulin puts the full-length picture " One and One ", in which in parallel plays a major role. In 1982, Tulin's independent painting, “ Broken Skies, ” based on the actress’s recollections of her childhood in a provincial Swedish town, was released on the screens.
In 1980, Ingrid Tulin presides over the jury of the West Berlin International Film Festival .
Tulin was twice married. First (from 1952 to 1955) for the Swedish theater director and set designer Klaes Sulwander , and later for 33 years (from 1956 to 1989) for Harry Schein (1924-2006), film critic, founder and director of the Swedish Film Institute (Svenska Filminstitutet).
The last years of her life, the actress spent in Rome. She was forced to return to her homeland by a protracted illness, which as a result interrupted her life. In Stockholm, shortly before her 78th birthday, Ingrid Tulin died of cancer.
