Robert Aitken ( born August 28, 1939 , Kentville, Nova Scotia ) is a Canadian composer and flutist.

Biography
In 1955 - 1959 he studied at the Royal Music Conservatory in Toronto . Then he improved his art in Europe, learning from S. Gazzelloni and J.P. Rampala . He played in the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra ( 1958 - 1959 ), in the Canadian Radio Orchestra ( 1959 - 1964 ), in the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (1965-1970).
He became a laureate of the Paris Flute Competition ( 1971 ). In 1977, Pierre Boulez invited him for a recital at IRCAM . Eitiott Carter , George Crum , John Cage , Heinz Holliger , Tora Takemitsu , Kazuo Fukushima, Roger Reynolds, Gilles Tramble and other composers dedicated their compositions to Aitken.

The artist’s repertoire includes Mare , Vivaldi , Bach , Telemann , Mozart , Spur , Kvantz , Kulau , Donizetti , Paganini , Schubert , Debussy , Sati , Zholive , Vinko Globokar, Yoritsune Matsudaira, many other contemporary composers of Europe, Canada, USA, Japan.
Composer
Among Aitken's works, a concert for flute, oboe, viola and double bass ( 1961 ), Music for flute and tape ( 1963 ), Monody for mixed choir and flute ( 1983 ), concert for flute and string orchestra ( 1999 ), Wedding song for two flutes ( 1999 ), a number of other compositions for flute.
Teaching activities
He taught at the University of Toronto ( 1960 - 1975 ), at the Freiburg Higher School of Music ( 1988 - 2004 ), taught master classes in many countries around the world.
