Biography
He grew up in the working suburb of Belfast, where playing the flute (folk and pop music) was a popular entertainment, and received the first lessons from his uncle, who led the amateur flute ensemble. Then he continued his studies in Belfast with Muriel Down; in London at the Royal Academy of Music with John Francis and at the Guildhall School of Music and Theater at Geoffrey Gilbert ; at the Paris Conservatory at Gaston Crunelle ( fr. Gaston Crunelle ). He took private lessons from Rampal and Moise . However, Galway left his studies at the Paris Conservatory and never received a diploma of higher education.
Galway began his professional career at the Royal Brass Band. Then he worked in the Shakespeare Theater Orchestra in Stratford-upon-Avon , the Welsh National Opera Orchestra and the Royal Covent Garden Theater , and played piccolo in the BBC Symphony Orchestra .
In 1967 he was a soloist of the London Symphony Orchestra , from 1967 to 1969 a soloist of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra . He was the first flutist of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Karayan ( 1969 - 1975 ). Then he began solo activity.
Galway’s repertoire includes a wide range of classical compositions: Vivaldi , Bach , Mozart , Danzi , Reich , Cimarosa , Schubert , Strauss and others. He is also interested in contemporary music - in particular, he collaborated with composers such as John Corigliano and Lowell Lieberman .
In 1978 , Galway recorded a cover version of John Denver 's famous hit “Annie's Song”, which reached third place in the UK charts, and many years later Galway recorded a solo part of the flute for the soundtrack of the third part of the epic “The Lord of the Rings” [2] . He also performs music of the peoples of the world, popular and jazz tunes.
Galway taught just one semester at the Eastman School of Music ( USA ). Among his few private students are famous flute players: Raffaele Trevisani , Andrea Oliva ( Italian: Andrea Oliva ) and Bulent Evsil ( tour: Bülent Evcil ).
Despite the tight schedule, he finds time to share his experience and wisdom with the younger generation, conducting master classes, distributing new compositions for the flute, publishing articles, books and textbooks for the flute. He also conducted musical and educational programs on television, on the basis of which the book by William Mann "James Galway's Music in Time" was released in 1982. Together with his wife, Lady Galway, he runs the International School of Flutists in Weggis (Switzerland) every summer, which gives him the opportunity to meet in person with students at various levels.
In 1979 , Galway published an autobiography (New York: St. Martin's Press, 1979). In 1982 , Galway's Flute Book (London: Macdonald & Co (Publishers) Ltd) was published.
Currently, Sir James lives in Lucerne (Switzerland).
A variety of large terry roses is named after him.
