Stalmuzh oak ( lit. Stelmužės ąžuolas ) - one of the oldest oaks in Europe . The oldest oak in the Baltic. Encyclopedic sources give different estimates of his age: almost 2,000 years [1] , about 1,000 years [2] , about 1,500 years [3] . Accurate determination of age is extremely difficult because the core of the trunk is rotten and has been removed.

Oak is located in the Zarasai district of Lithuania , in the village of Stelmuzhe , near the border of Latvia and about 30 km from the borders of Belarus .
Description
The height of the oak is 23 meters, the diameter in the widest part of 3.5 m (girth reaches 13.5 m).
The tree has experienced several historical epochs in the history of the region, possibly seen by crusaders and swordsmen . According to legend, in the times of paganism, the Lithuanians worshiped Perun under it.
During the first restoration in 1916, he sawed a hollow, cleaned rotten wood from the inside, installed a fence.
In 1960, the Stelmuzhsky oak was declared a natural monument and was included in the list of protected objects of Lithuania.
Currently, the state of the tree is poor, the oak is covered with mushrooms, mosses, lichens. Since 2005, he has been studied by Czech arborist scientist Martin Nemets . He proposed a tree care plan, in which it is planned to install a fence that does not allow tourists to the root zone, remove the masonry of the retaining wall, mulch the soil with oak chips, dig water collectors and channels to absorb water, chop off the tops of crown branches (stimulating epicormine growth) and branches that can break, cut down the surrounding trees, obscuring the light [4] . There are also plans to clone an oak tree at the Forestry Institute (in Girionis, Kaunas district).

Juozas Baltushis “What is not sung in the song”:
The whole Zarasai region is beautiful. I saw it once in my life, and you won’t forget what the beauty of our planet would be. And most of all he attracts the heart of the famous giant, the gray-headed Stelmuzhskiy Oak, who had long ago survived the same age in all of Europe, crossed the second thousand years. You come to it, as if to a great sanctuary, quiet and solemn, where every spoken word seems to be sacrilege, and the ordinary gray thought is evidence of human triviality. Having pondered, having turned away from the routine, people look at him. Though years are crushing, old age tends to the earth, but the patriarch of our forests does not think about the death.
