Content

Description

The original description is compiled by the larva. Teeth teeth in two arcuate series. The head is large, the end of the muzzle is rounded. Costal fissures 14-15. On the front and back legs there are four fingers with black-brown horniness on the tips forming the claws. The tail is flattened from the sides, to its end it is narrowed so that the greatest height falls on its middle, at the very end is rounded. The skin is smooth. The color of the back is brownish with scattered irregular-shaped spots. Abdomen without blemishes.

Distribution and habitat

The Talysh and Elburs Mountains in the provinces of Ardabil , Gilan , Golestan and Mazanderan in northern Iran . Occurs on wet slopes facing the Caspian Sea . They live in mountain streams, devoid of predatory fish, in the zone of deciduous forests of beech (Fagus orientalis) and maple (Acer laetum) at an altitude of 800-1200 m. 13-15 ° C. In general, the climate in the habitats of these tritons is characterized by a large amount of precipitation and mild winter. With a sufficiently long range, the species can hardly be called ordinary.

Lifestyle

Little known. Permanent view. Detect adult individuals is not easy. The larvae prefer to keep shaded areas with a relatively slow flow and rocks appearing from the water. The larvae found in the same streams, often could be divided into two groups, within which the differences in size are small, but very noticeable between individuals from different groups. This suggests that the larvae hibernate before they complete the metamorphosis .
