Biography

Huey Pierce Long Jr. Born August 30, 1893 in an agricultural area in the north of Louisiana in the farming family of Huey Pierce Long ( English Huey Pierce Long, Sr , 1852-1937) and Caledonia Palestine Tison ( English Caledonia Palestine Tison , 1860-1913). He was the seventh out of nine child. The elder brother George Long ( English George Shannon "Doc" Long , 1883-1958) was subsequently a member of the US House of Representatives from Louisiana in 1953-1958. The younger brother Earl Long , 1895-1960) served as governor of Louisiana three times (1939-1940, 1948-1952, 1956-1960).

Already in elementary school he established himself as a capable student with photographic memory , but was expelled in 1910 for signing a petition to protest the introduction of a twelve-year education system (it became generally accepted in the United States only after World War II ).

After a failed attempt to enter the University of Louisiana , he worked as a salesman for four years selling books, canned food, and medicine. In addition, he worked as an auctioneer.

In 1913, he married Rose McConnell . A year later, Long began to attend the Baptist University in Oklahoma , began to attend law courses at the University of Oklahoma . He soon moved to the University of New Orleans at Tulane .

In 1915, he successfully passed exams and received the right to practice law.

In 1924, he stood for election as governor of Louisiana. His campaign was built on criticism of the incumbent Governor Parker, Standard Oil and the political elite of the state and the state as a whole. He was one of the first politicians in the southern United States to use radio for political agitation. American historians wrote about him as the "brainchild" of the radio era. According to the election results, he received a third of the vote. It is believed that the general success was prevented by his unwillingness to clearly state his position in relation to the Ku Klux Klan . In addition, on election day, heavy rain prevented voters from rural areas where Long’s main electorate was from reaching polling stations. However, despite the defeat in the election, he was elected to the Louisiana Public Service Commission and remained in public politics.

For the next four years, Long prepared for the 1928 Louisiana governorate election. He launched the campaign, under the slogan “So that everyone is king, but no one wears a crown” (“Every man a king, but no one wears a crown”).

During the years of the Great Depression, he led a mass movement of a populist nature against the policy of the New Deal of Roosevelt . He put forward the “wealth sharing” program, which attracted more than 7.5 million supporters to his “Share Our Wealth” movement. The basis of his program was a tough progressive tax . The poorest Americans were exempt from taxation, while for millionaires the tax was very high. He constantly clashed with the largest corporations, first of all, with the Rockefeller Standard Oil .

He intended to participate in the 1936 presidential election , but in September 1935 he was shot dead by Dr. Karl Weiss in the Louisiana Capitol , built a few years before by order of Long. Weiss was shot by guards on the spot. Two days later, on the night of September 10, Huey Long died in the Baton Rouge hospital, which, again, was built on his initiative.
