Adzhemyan, Anahit

Anahit Ajemyan ( born Anahid Ajemian ; January 26, 1924 - June 13, 2016 ) is an American violinist of Armenian descent. Sister of the pianist Maro Adzhemyan , wife of George Avakyan (since 1948).

Biography

She graduated from the Juilliard School at Edouard Child . In 1946 , she won the Naumburg Competition for Young Performers . In a duet with her sister, she often performed music by contemporary composers: Ernst Kshenek , John Cage and other prominent authors wrote music specially for this duet.

In the 1940s Together with her sister, she founded the Friends of Armenian Music Committee in New York .

Long-term lecturer at Columbia University .
