He received an Oscar in 1959 for the best documentary and the prize of the Berlin International Film Festival - the Golden Berlin Bear. The film was shot in Canada for three years. Widely known as the fabrication of the suicide myth of lemmings during mass migration. The whole migration and suicide scene was completely staged, starting with the fact that there are no lemmings populations in Alberta , so the filmmakers bought several dozen lemmings in Manitoba . Moreover, during the filming of “migration” they were pushed into the river with a broom.
