In March 1997, a fight between two undefeated boxers took place - Montella Griffin and WBC light heavyweight champion Roy Jones . At the end of the 7th round, Jones made a right hook to the head, and then drawing closer, a short left hook to the jaw. Griffin fell onto the canvas. He rose immediately. The referee counted the knockdown. Griffin did not agree with him, believing that he had fallen from the shock. At the end of round 9, Jones made two right hooks to the head. Griffin twitched. Jones held another right side. The challenger moved to the ropes. The champion again held the right hook. Griffin ran away from the ropes alone. Jones hit the exact left hook in the jaw. Griffin approached the ropes and knelt down. Jones, carried away by the attack, did not notice this, and held the right hook to the head, and the left side to the jaw. Griffin fell. The referee counted to 10, and stopped the fight. Jones' corner rejoiced at the end of the battle. However, they were then informed that there would be a disqualification. After the fight, HBO commentator Larry Merchant interviewed all the participants in the battle. Jones said that he continued to attack the opponent, because he did not think that he was knocked down, but considered it a low dive , otherwise the referee should intervene. Jones said that since the referee did not intervene, there was no knockdown. The referee said that he intervened on time and that Jones was supposed to interrupt the attack when the opponent was on the floor. He also said that if Griffin rose, the fight would continue, and the champion would be fined one or two points. The challenger said that Jones hit him when he knelt down. To the suspicion of a simulation, Griffin replied that he missed a strong blow and really could not continue the fight.
