Born on a Stovall plantation near Clarksdale , Mississippi. Boyd moved to Memphis , Tennessee in 1936, where he began playing the piano and guitar with his band Dixie Rhythm Boys . Boyd followed the other blacks during the so-called Great Migration (the migration of black Americans from the South to the northern states, which took place mainly in the 1940s - 1970s) to the north, and began to work in Chicago in 1941.
He wrote and recorded Five Long Years (1952), 24 Hours (1953) and Third Degree (co-written with Willy Dixon, also in 1953). In 1965, he toured Europe with Buddy Guy as part of the American folk blues festival. He later toured and recorded music with the bands Fleetwood Mac and John Mayall and Blusbreykars .
Suffering from racial discrimination in the United States, he was forced to emigrate first to Belgium, where he recorded songs with the Dutch band Cuby and the Blizzards . In 1970, he settled in Helsinki, Finland, where he recorded ten compositions, the first of which was Praise to Helsinki (1970). In 1977, he married a woman named Leila. His last blues concert took place in 1984, later he recorded only gospel music .
Boyd died in 1994 in Helsinki, Finland, a few months before Eric Clapton released the highly successful blues album From the Cradle , which included cover versions of Boyd's Five Long Years and Third Degree .
