History
The history of the club begins in 1893. Or rather, the life of a football club begins 4 years later. The club from Genoa is inferior in age to the two Torino teams “Torino” and “Juventus” . [one]
The football club took part in the first championship of Italy in 1898. The first match was against the Torino club Torino , with this victory the club began its journey to trophies. [2] This rally ended victoriously for Genoa, where they won their first trophy. The club will soon rise again in 1899 and 1900. [3]
In 1908, the club for the first time in its history encountered a “limit on legionnaires”. The main feature was that it was not just a limit, but an absolute ban on foreign players, who at that time constituted the main “foundation” of the team. [4] This reason became the key one due to which the team had to miss the next championship draw. [5] The next season, the football federation changed its attitude towards the limit on legionnaires and completely changed them, and the club was able to resume its performances with a number of new players. [6] [7]
After the First World War ended, the team was waiting for a serious recovery period, because at the fronts there were bloody battles where many team players died. The first trophy that the team received was won after the war in the 1922/23 season. The club will be able to gain a foothold at the very top in the next draw, which was the last year for the team. [8] [9] After the winning season, it was difficult for the team to get to the trophy; in the 1927/28 season, the club could not win the trophy. Only in 1929 and 1930 the team was able to win silver in the championship. After that, the team was able to win bronze only after 7 years, but because of which it preceded a flight to Serie B. [10] [11]
The Second World War again left a very deep wound in the history of Genoa. The wound turned out to be so serious that it was no longer possible to regain its former glory and trophies. The pursuit of titles at the top of the standings could only dream of. [12]
In 1950–60, nothing significant happened in the club’s history, except for the departure to Serie B. But the team decided not to stop and in 1970 decided to try their hand at Serie S. [13] The team did not like to stay in Serie C, and the return the top division only happened in the 1973/74 season. [fourteen]
In general, in the 70s, 80s, 90s, the club became a permanent resident in the lower divisions, often changed coaches and was unstable financially. The club was in crisis and this was not the best period for a club with such a history and such traditions. [15] [16]
A new era in the team came with the arrival of Gian Piero Gasperini , who joined Genoa in 2006 and brought the club to Italy’s football elite, competing with Napoli . [17]
In the 2008/09 season, forward Diego Milito returned to the club, who contributed a lot to the club’s achievement. 5th place was taken by the team in Serie A. With all this, the club fought for medals and a ticket to the Champions League, but such a goal was unattainable, including due to two defeats at the end of the championship from Bologna and Lazio . The club did not have the experience to play confidently at a crucial moment. [18] [19]
After the end of the relatively successful season, the team leader Diego Milito left the club and moved to Inter. He turned up at the right time in the right place and under the guidance of the right coach. His achievement is a “golden hat-trick” in one season. [twenty]
At that time, the Argentine striker Rodrigo Palacio was purchased to replace Diego Milito , who could not live up to his hopes, although he scored quite often in Serie A. Also, the 2006 world champion, who is part of the Italian national team, striker Alberto Gilardino, is worth noting. Now the club has become not so powerful as before, and even the native walls of the stadium and the fans do not always help the club. [21] [22]
Derby and Ultras
The Genoa club has one main derby, it is matches with the Sampdoria club (this confrontation is called the Lantern derby ).
Friends are considered ultras clubs: Napoli , Alessandria , Ancona and Vigor Lamezia .
