In the APG II classification system, the family is part of the Liliales (treasure monocotypus ) order and includes approximately two hundred species of perennial grasses.
The Dahlgren system and the Thorne system (1992) also recognize this family, placing it in the Liliales order of the Lilianae order of the subclass Liliidae of the class Liliopsida .
