Ivan Dmitrievich Vasiliev was born on September 21 ( October 3 ), 1897 (according to other sources, October 15 [1] [2] ) in St. Petersburg in a working class family.

He graduated from the 7th grade of the gymnasium.

Military Service

World War I and Civil War

In May 1916, he was drafted into the ranks of the Russian Imperial Army , after which he was trained at a four-month course at the Pavlovsky Military Infantry School , after which he was sent to the 9th Infantry Regiment ( 3rd Infantry Division ), in which he took part in the fighting on the Romanian front , being the junior company officer, elected company commander. After the February Revolution, he became an elected battalion commander. At the end of December 1917, Second Lieutenant Vasiliev, together with a group of soldiers of the regiment in Petrograd , where at the end of February 1918 joined the Red Guard detachment and was appointed to the post of the quarterly Polustrovsky Commissariat, and then being the commander of the Red Guard detachment, took part in the protection of the city.

In December 1918 he was sent to the 1st Communist Food Squad named after Badayev, intended to carry out an additional reconnaissance in Ukraine . In January 1931 - to the post of deputy chief of the 1st department of the headquarters of the Belarusian military district , but in November of the same year he was sent to study at the operational department of the MV Frunze Military Academy with retirement. After completing his studies in May 1932, he was appointed to the post of chief of staff of the Kiev Mechanized Brigade ( Ukrainian Military District ), which was soon transformed into the 2nd separate mechanized brigade , and then relocated to the Far East and included in OKDVA . In May 1934 he was appointed commander and military commissar of the same brigade. In August 1936, "for success in the combat and political training of the brigade," Vasiliev was awarded the Order of Lenin .

World War II

With the outbreak of war, on June 23, he was appointed commander of the 14th Panzer Division, which conducted military operations during the Lepel counterattack , and then Daugavpils , Pskov and Novgorod directions.

On February 3, 1943, Colonel Vasilyev was appointed commander of the 19th Panzer Corps , which soon took part in the fighting during the Battle of Kursk , the Battle of the Dnieper and the Melitopol Offensive Operation . At the end of October 1943, the corps fought on the territory of Northern Tavria , during which the enemy troops retreated to the city of Kakhovka ( Kherson region ).
