Career
Javier Perez de Cuellar began working in the Ministry of International Relations of Peru since 1940 , later, in 1944 , transferred to the diplomatic service. He worked in the embassies of Peru in France , Great Britain , Bolivia and Brazil . In 1964 he was appointed Ambassador of Peru to Switzerland , in 1969-1971 - Ambassador of Peru in the USSR and Poland , and in 1977-1979 - in Venezuela . In addition, in 1971 - 1982 . Javier Perez de Cuellar led the Peruvian delegation to the UN .
In 1981, 16 rounds of voting were held before a decision was made on the appointment of de Cuellar as Secretary General. On January 1, 1982, he was elected Secretary-General of the United Nations, having worked in this post for two terms, actively participating as a mediator in many conflicts.
In 1987, he was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of Zagreb [4] .
In 1995, he participated in the presidential election in Peru, but won 22 % of the vote, losing to Alberto Fujimori .
In 2000-2001 , Perez de Cuellar was the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Peru, and in 2002-2004 , he was Chairman of the Congress of the Latin Union .
On June 14, 2007, his predecessor, Kurt Waldheim , passed away and Javier Perez de Cuellar became the oldest living UN Secretary General.
