Biography
Born on August 15, 1816 in Vyshny Volochyok , was the son of a famous engineer and hydrograph I.F. Shtukenberg . [1] In 1836 he graduated from the Institute of Railway Engineers with the rank of lieutenant .
In 1836 - 1840 he served in Eastern Siberia, explored routes in the Transbaikal Mountains, traced the Circum-Baikal Railway . There he became closely acquainted with the Decembrists, he was friendly with many to one degree or another, when N. A. Bestuzhev died, on May 15, 1855, A. I. Shtukenberg wrote about him as a friend:
And again, while in Russia such people will languish in the dark unknown, surrounded either by fortress walls or the desert, and move the untalented everyone, not go to her, darling, forward, but just sit there ... waiting for God to give legs [2]
In addition, he recorded the stories of the Decembrist A. I. Yakubovich about the duel with Griboedov . [3]
In 1840, upon returning from a business trip, he immediately received a new assignment: to participate in the work to correct the Visher Canal of the Vyshnevolotsky water system [1] .
From the construction of the Nikolaev railway
In 1842-1849 he investigated the direction and built part of the Nikolaev railway - from Vyshny Volochek station to Kalashnikovo station. After its opening, he controlled traffic from Okulovskaya to Spirovskaya station (the city of Tver) .
In 1855-1857, by order of the chief manager of communications, he was sent to the Crimea to arrange military railways, after which in 1857-1853 he served in St. Petersburg as the head of the department of the 1st district of communications, during this period (in 1859) according to his project Kamennoostrovsky bridge was rebuilt: arched structures were replaced by beam, strut systems.
In 1863-1865 he was in Moscow as the head of the III district.
In 1865-1887 he was a member of the Technical and Construction Committee at the Ministry of Internal Affairs in St. Petersburg and since 1873 a senior technician at the St. Petersburg city government. In this position, he took an active part in the work of the commission on the construction of a permanent bridge named after Emperor Alexander II (Liteiny) across the Neva River .
In 1873, he was also appointed a senior technician at the St. Petersburg City Council, combining these positions until his death. He built the Big Krestovsky bridge and made some other city buildings.
The death of A.I. Shtukenberg occurred on March 7, 1887 in St. Petersburg, 71 years from birth. He is buried in the Volkovsky Lutheran cemetery, the Shtukenberg family plot, Baronskaya road, section 23. [4]
