The Holy Spirit Monastery in Volgograd is a male Orthodox monastery , transformed in 1912 from a bishop’s compound built in 1908-1911 by Hieromonk Iliodor (Trufanov) with the blessing of the bishop of Saratov and Tsaritsyno Germogen (Dolganev) . He gained all-Russian fame thanks to the aggressive Black-Hundred sermons of Iliodor, which gathered crowds of thousands, and then a hunger strike for parishioners who protested against the deportation of the hieromonk from the city.

History
Before the opening. Bishop's Compound
At the beginning of the 20th century, the territory of the monastery was located directly outside the city and, most likely, was empty. The monastery’s construction committee was formed on May 16, 1903, [1] and on February 17, 1904, the city council approved the transfer of the land for the bishop’s compound of the Saratov diocese, where Tsaritsyn was the second most important city. In 1905, the first buildings appeared here: the summer church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles , at first accommodating about 100 people ( four squares 12x12 meters) and the tiny house of the sexton . [2] The author of the buildings was probably the diocesan architect Alexei Salko . The refectory and the bell tower of the church were added only in 1907, on October 28, consecration took place. [3] To manage the compound from March 1, 1908, Germogen appointed a native of the Don Army Hieromonk Iliodor.
The Glory and Exile of Iliodor

In 1913 it was transformed into a female.
The fate of the complex in the USSR
In 1923 the monastery was closed, and the buildings are occupied by various institutions. During the Great Patriotic War , repair shops were located here, then a military unit.
Rebirth
A phasanarium with several rare birds opened in the monastery in April 2010. [4] Monasticists and students of the Orthodox University are engaged in the improvement of the pheasantry.
In 2011, the chapel of St. John the Evangelist was assigned to the monastery on the slope of the Tsaritsa River near the Second Longitudinal Highway.
The number of monks at the beginning of 2012 was 13 people. [five]
Rectors
In April 1912, hieromonk Irinarkh (Ivan Semenovich Shemanovsky) became the first rector of the monastery, until 13 years old he headed the Orthodox mission on the Yamal Peninsula [6] (the main museum of Salekhard is now named after him). [7] An educated nobleman with his sympathies for socialists and national minorities could not find a common language with the flock raised by Iliodor and a few months later he was transferred to Seoul to manage the Korean mission .
Hieromonk Vladimir (Terentyev) (who later died in the Soviet exile and was recognized as a locally revered saint by the Saratov diocese) temporarily managed the monastery from August 8, 1912. [eight]
After the monastery was transformed into a female abbess, until the monastery was liquidated, there was a nun ( abbess ) from 1915 Pavel Lipovskaya, she opened a parish school in the monastery and organized the construction of a winter church attached to the western side of the Holy Spirit Church. [9] After 1918, the abbess of Paul was repressed.
Since 1992, the duties of the abbot were performed by the Metropolitan of Volgograd and Kamyshin German. For several years, hegumen Barsanuphius (Lavrishchev) performed the duties of the deanery of the monastery. In October 2011, at his request, Hieromonk Gabriel (Kulikov) was appointed hegumen. [ten]
