The district was formed as part of the Arkhangelsk district in 1929 . He was divided into 16 village councils: Vaimuzhsky, Verkolsky, Erkonemsky, Karpogorsky, Kevrolsky, Krotovsky, Lavelsky, Nyukhchensky, Pirinemsky, Poganetsky, Pokshengsky, Suletsky, Sursky, Shardonemsky, Shotogorsky, Yavzorsky.
In 1931, the Erkonemsky village council was renamed Kushkopalsky. In 1932, the Bystrovsky Village Council was formed. In 1935, the Poganetsky village council was renamed Gorodetsky.
In 1954, the Pirinemsky Village Council was annexed to Shotogorsky, the Bystrovsky Village Council to Karpogorsky, the Yavzorsky Village Council to Lavelsky, the Gorodetsky Village Council to Sursky, the Shardonemsky Village Council to Vaimuzhsky.
On September 11, 1959, the Karpogorsky district was abolished, and its territory became part of the Pinezhsky district .
