Project History

Vladimir Putin at the opening of the Gazprom Mountain and Tourism Center on January 2, 2008

The first work on the construction of the facility began in 2000 . The investor of the complex was PJSC Gazprom , the project was implemented by its subsidiary Gazprom Sotsinvest LLC [1] . After Sochi was chosen as the capital of the XXII Winter Olympic Games , it was decided to build at the expense of the budget a number of sports facilities in the complex [2] . Implementation took place in accordance with paragraph 2 of the Program for the construction of Olympic facilities and the development of Sochi as a mountain-climatic resort [3] , approved by the Government of the Russian Federation.

February 21, 2007 in the Gazprom GTC on the Psekhako plateau the second stage of the Russian Ski Track Grand Prix was held. The strongest skiers, winners of regional competitions, went to the start of the future Olympic track. In 2008, construction of the first stage facilities was completed. Some of the facilities were inaugurated in the presence of President of Russia V.V. Putin on January 2, 2008 .

The Laura ski and biathlon complex was built in 2011 on the Psekhako plateau at an altitude of 1450 meters above sea level. The complex included two separate stadiums with start and finish areas, 2 separate system of tracks for skiing and biathlon, a shooting range, a zone for preparing for competitions, a fitness room, a conference room. In 2012, the first test competitions were held there.

In 2013, the construction of the Gazprom mountain-tourist center was completed [4] . According to the newspaper Izvestia, Gazprom’s expenses for the complex from 2009 to 2013 amounted to 35.37 billion rubles [5] .

During the XXII Winter Olympic Games in 2014 at the Laura ski and biathlon complex , located on the territory of the GTZ, all skiing and biathlon competitions were held. There was also a mountain Olympic village in which athletes lived. Since December 2014, it was this former Olympic mountain village that opened its doors as a hotel complex “Polyana 1389. Hotel and Spa”.

Ecology

Since 2010, GTZ Gazprom has been implementing a program of compensatory measures and environmental measures. During the construction of the Olympic facilities, specialists of Gazprom Sotsinvest LLC transplanted Red Book plants to places remote from the construction. On the Psekhako ridge they planted a Colchis needle, bulbs of a Caucasian peony, Caucasian cyclamens, seedlings of wild apple trees, wild bird cherries.

To minimize the environmental impact at the construction sites of Olympic facilities, Gazprom Sotsinvest specialists applied modern drilling and construction technologies.

Environmental organizations sharply criticized plans to expand the Rosa Khutor and Laura (Gazprom) resorts within the boundaries of the Sochi Reserve [6] [7] [8] .

Currently, the resort is implementing environmental monitoring and separate collection of solid waste.
