Biography
Abraham Blumart’s father is a sculptor and architect Cornelis Bloemert ( Dutch: Cornelis Bloemaert I ), from whom Abraham Blumart studied painting as a child [1] , then continued to improve his skills in Utrecht and Paris , and in 1597 became a citizen of Amsterdam and worked from 1611 in Utrecht, where (presumably) he lived until his death.
Bloomart had a great influence on the development of Dutch painting. Among his many students are Jan Bot with his brother Andris , Jacob Cape , his son Albert Cape , Jan Baptist Venix and Nikolaus Knupfer .
Combining the traditions of the Dutch and Flemish painting schools in his work, he painted canvases on historical themes, portraits , genre scenes and landscapes .
Numerous engravings and woodcuts created based on his works reflect the artistic aspirations of the painter. The artist's manner of working with color resembles the work of the mannerists of the 16th century .
Most of Bloomart’s surviving paintings are in the San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts, as well as in art galleries in Berlin and the Louvre .
The four sons of Abraham Blumart, Hendrick , Adrian , Cornelius and Frederick continued the family dynasty and also dedicated their lives to art (the first was a painter, and the other three were mainly engraving) [2] .
At the end of the XIX - beginning of the XX centuries on the pages of the " Encyclopedic Dictionary of Brockhaus and Efron " the artist’s work received the following rating:
“ His best works include: Adoration of the Shepherds”, “The Holy Family” (in the Berlin Museum), a large historical painting “The Death of the Sons of Niobia” (at the Royal Gallery in Copenhagen) and many others located in Paris, Munich, The Hague, etc. According to portraiture, B.'s most successful work is his own portrait. In addition, B. was an excellent engraver and molder ” [1] .
