In 1903, he invented a device for automatic coupling of cars, named after him ( him. Scharfenbergkupplung or Schaku , German patent issued March 18, 1904 ). In the hitch Scharfenberg immediately carried out the mechanical connection and connection of electrical circuits. The Scharfenberg coupler is used in the system of many units in subway cars and some types of tram cars (for example, Tatra T6B5 ).
In 1921 he founded the company "Scharfenberg Aktiengesellschaft", in 1925 the Schaku coupling began to be used on the "Berliner S-Bahn" and "Hamburger Hochbahn" [1] .
