Irving Noth Baxter ( Eng. Irving Knot Baxter ; March 25, 1876 , Utica , New York , June 13, 1957 , Utica , New York ) - American ( Sioux by nationality) athlete , two-time champion and three-time silver medalist at the 1900 Summer Olympics .

He was educated at the University of Pennsylvania . His main roles were pole vaulting and high . In 1899, he became the champion of the Intercollegiate Association of American amateur athletes in high jump and the US champion in pole vaulting. In 1900, Baxter, during a trip to Paris for the 1900 Summer Olympics, participated in the UK High Jump Championship and won the competition. He defended his title the following year .

At the 1900 Games, he became a champion in both of his disciplines, breaking both times the Olympic record - in the high jump the new achievement was the result of 1.90 m, and in the pole vault - 3.30 m. Baxter also competed in the jumping disciplines from the spot - high jump, long jump and triple jump. All three times he took second place, each time losing to his compatriot Ray Yuri .

After the Games, Baxter became the five-time U.S. pole vault champion from 1907 to 1910 and 1912 .
