History
The history of the creation of Northwestern University dates back to the meeting on May 31, 1850 of nine prominent Chicago entrepreneurs, Methodist leaders and lawyers who came to the idea of creating the first university in the Northwest Territory . On January 28, 1851, the Illinois General Assembly granted a charter for trustees of Northwestern University, making it the first University of Illinois to be established [2] [3] .
John Evans, after whom the city of Evanston was named, bought 379 acres (153 ha) of land along Lake Michigan in 1853 , and Philo Judson devised a plan for the construction of the city of Evanston. The first university building ( Old College ) opened on November 5, 1855 [2] . To raise funds for its construction, Northwestern University sold $ 100 of “Eternal Fellowships”, which entitle the buyer and his heirs to study at the university for free [2] [4] . In 1873, Evanston College for Ladies merged with Northwestern University, and Francis Willard , who later became known as a suffragette and as one of the founders of the Women's Christian Union , became the first female dean. Willard College (1938) is named after her. Northwestern University recognized its first female students in 1869 , and the first woman graduated from the university in 1874 [2] .
The university introduced its first inter-university football team in 1882, later becoming one of the founders of the Big Ten conference. In the 1870s and 1880s, Northwestern University joined the existing schools of law, medicine, and dentistry in Chicago. Law School named after Pritzker Northwestern University is the oldest law school in Chicago. As the university increased its wealth and developed new directions, the number of students increased, these schools were combined with a baccalaureate in Evanston. The result was a modern research university, combining professional, graduate and undergraduate programs that gave equal weight to teaching and research. [5]
