The center is the city of Rustavi .
It borders with other parts of Samtskhe-Javakheti , Shida-Kartli , Mtskheta-Mtianeti , Kakheti and the city of Tbilisi . The state border with Azerbaijan runs in the southeast, and Armenia in the south.

As of January 1, 2018, the population of the region amounted to 432,264 residents [2] , as of January 1, 2014 - 513,100 inhabitants, as of January 1, 2009 - 488,800 residents [12] .
According to the census of 2014, the population of the region was 423 986 people [10] , according to the 2002 census - 497 530 people [10] .
According to the 2014 census, out of 423,986 inhabitants of the region, Georgians were 51.3% or 217 305 people, Azerbaijanis - 41.8% or 177 032 people, Armenians - 5.1% or 21 500 people, Russians - 0.6%, Greeks - 0.5%, Ossetians - 0.2% [3] .
According to the 2002 census, out of 497,530 inhabitants of the region, Georgians were 44.7% or 222,450 people, Azerbaijanis 45.1% or 224,606 people, Armenians 6.4% (31,777 people), Greeks 1.5 % (7 415 people), Russians - 1.3% (6 464 people), Ossetians - 0.4% (2 184 people), Ukrainians - 0.1% (527 people).
According to the 2002 census, Azerbaijanis constituted an absolute majority in the Marneuli municipality (83.1% against 8.0% of Georgians and 7.9% of Armenians ), Dmanisi (66.8% against 31.2% of Georgians ) and Bolnisi (66.0% versus 26.8% of Georgians and 5.8% of Armenians ) districts of the region, relative equality - in Gardaban - 43.7% (against 53.2% of Georgians ).
According to the 2002 census, the majority in the Tsalka municipality were Armenians (55.0%) with relatively large shares of Greeks (22.0%) and Georgians (12.0%).
According to the 2002 census, Georgians constituted an absolute majority in the city of Rustavi (87.8% against 4.3% of Azerbaijanis , 3.1% of Russians , 2.4% of Armenians and 1.2% of Ossetians ) and the Tetritskaro municipality (74.0% against 10.4% of Armenians , 6.5% of Azerbaijanis , 5.1% of Greeks and 2.7% of Russians ).
