Biography

Dzhumabay Akhmadzhonovich Khodzhiev [1] was born on June 12, 1969 in the village of Khoja-kishlak of the Namangan region of Namangan region. Graduate of vocational school № 28 of the city of Namangan . In November 1987, he was called up for military service in the airborne troops . Since 1988, took part in the Afghan war . After demobilization in 1989, he returned to the Ferghana Valley, where he fell under the influence of local religious activists [2] .

At the end of 1989, he became a student of one of the most respected theologians of the Central Asian region, Abduvali Mirzaev. Khodzhiev took an active part in the creation of the militarized, fundamentalist organization Tovba (Repentance), which aimed to build a Sharia state on the territory of the Ferghana Valley by force of arms [2] . In 1992, along with thirty followers, he fled to the Kurgan-Tyube region in western Tajikistan [3] . With the assistance of Tajik radicals (in particular, Mohammadsharif Khimmatzoda , who was involved in the formation of the IRPT military structure), he traveled to Afghanistan, where he ended up in a training camp for the Tajik opposition in the northern province of Kunduz . Later, he underwent training at the training base of the Jamaat-e Islami organization in the area of ​​the city of Varsadzh in the northeastern province of Tahor .

Together with Tahir Yuldash , he was one of the prominent figures of the radical Islamic opposition in Central Asia [3] .

On November 17, 2000, the Supreme Court of Uzbekistan was convicted of organizing terrorist acts in Tashkent in 1999 and sentenced to death in absentia [3] [4] .

He lived in Afghanistan , where he worked closely with the Taliban . According to an official statement by General Dostum , Juma Namangani died in the defense of Kunduz in November 2001 [1] [3] . Nevertheless, the leaders of the security forces of Uzbekistan disbelieved this information [3] , and in June 2002 the Secretary of the Security Council of Kyrgyzstan said that Namangani was alive and was preparing an invasion of the Ferghana Valley [5] .
