Mercedes Benz Citaro hydrogen fuel cell in London

Clean Urban Transport for Europe (CUTE, HyFLEET: CUTE) - Clean urban transport for Europe. European Union hydrogen fuel cell test program.

The CUTE program started on November 23, 2001 , and ended on May 22, 2006 .

The purpose of the program: testing of hydrogen transport , testing of gas stations , testing of hydrogen production technologies, testing of existing hydrogen infrastructure, analysis of risks and benefits of hydrogen technologies.

The cities of Amsterdam , Barcelona , Hamburg , London , Madrid , Luxembourg , Porto , Stockholm , Stuttgart and Reykjavik each received three Mercedes-Benz Citaro buses with a hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system. Later, Beijing and Australian Perth launched three buses each . A total of 36 buses were tested. From 2003 to 2006 , buses traveled more than 2 million km. and transported 6 million passengers. Cities were selected with different climatic conditions.

After completing the financing of the CUTE project, it was decided to continue the operation of hydrogen buses. To do this, the HyFLEET program was adopted: CUTE ("Hydrogen for CUTE" - Hydrogen for CUTE). The number of buses in Hamburg increased to 9.

The Australian government has decided to extend the testing of hydrogen fuel cell buses in Perth . Three buses were tested over two years. During this time, buses transported 200,000 passengers and traveled 160,000 km. Australian Government Allocates AUS $ 1.75 Million to Continue Testing

At the end of 2007 , under the HyFLEET: CUTE program, 47 buses were operated in 10 cities. Of these, 33 Mercedes-Benz Citaro hydrogen fuel cell buses and 14 MAN buses with hydrogen-powered internal combustion engines in Berlin .

The project involves:

  • Automotive Companies: Daimler , NEOMAN Bus
  • Energy companies: Air Liquide, BP Gas Marketing, Norsk Hydro , Shell Hydrogen BV, Repsol YPF , TOTAL Deutschland GmbH
  • Transport companies
  • Government structures of China and Australia.
