Since April 30, 1894 - Senior Adjutant to the Headquarters of the 34th Infantry Division. Since August 21, 1895 - chief officer for assignments at the headquarters of the 7th Army Corps . From March 16, 1900, he served as headquarters officer for assignments at the headquarters of the Odessa Military District ; from October 12, 1900, he was senior adjutant to the headquarters of the Odessa Military District.

He participated in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905. On November 6, 1904, he was a senior adjutant of the headquarters quartermaster general of the Manchurian army. On October 2, 1905, he was seconded to the General Staff; on August 7, 1906, he was the clerk of the Central Administration of Civil Defense. He appeared in print, proving the need for reform in the army.

Since March 17, 1908 - commander of the 140th Zaraisk Infantry Regiment . Major General (Art.17.06.1910). Since June 17, 1910 - commander of the 2nd Brigade of the 46th Infantry Division .

World War I

At the beginning of World War I, he commanded a brigade. From August 9, 1915, he was in the reserve of ranks at the headquarters of the Kiev military district . Since October 17, 1915 - Head of the 55th Infantry Division . Since February 20, 1916 - commander of the Grenadier Corps (succeeded by A.N. Kuropatkin , who was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Northern Front).

Since July 20, 1917 - commander of the 12th Army . On July 14 (27), 1917, on the orders of the Commander-in-Chief of the Front Armies, General V.N. Klembovsky, Ikskyulsky bridgehead was without a fight. On August 21 ( September 3 ), 1917 , army troops surrendered Riga and Ust-Dvinsk . The Riga operation had not only military, but also political significance. The surrender of Riga and the military threat that arose to Petrograd was used by the head of the interim government A.F.
