Technical Data
According to the project, “Crystal Island” was to have a height of 450 m, while all the useful areas of the building were to be grouped below 150 m, an observation deck would be located at an altitude of about 300 m. The shape of the building would be a cone with a concave lateral surface. The diameter of the base is 700 m. A diagonal grid with rhombic cells on the facade of the building and a hyperboloid shape of the structure brings Crystal Island closer to the Shukhov Tower .
“Crystal Island” was planned as a “city in a city” containing premises for various purposes: it was planned to allocate 800 thousand m² for cultural events, 300 thousand m² for hotels (with a total number of rooms of about 3000), 250 thousand m² - for shopping and entertainment and 250 thousand m² for sports complexes, the underground parking area will be 423 thousand m². Also, the building was supposed to accommodate 900 elite apartments and an international school for 500 students.
The skyscraper was supposed to receive part of the electricity from solar panels and wind generators, it planned a scheme of natural ventilation.
It was assumed that next to the new district an additional metro station between Avtozavodskaya and Kolomenskaya would open.
Project Implementation History
On December 14, 2007, the proposal to place the “Crystal Island” in the Nagatinsky floodplain was approved at a meeting of the Public Council under the Moscow Mayor [3] . Only Alexey Klimenko, vice president of the Academy of Art Criticism, objected to the construction. In his opinion, Kristallny Island resembles a Buddhist stupa and is alien to the style of development prevailing in Moscow, nearby is Kolomenskoye , the perception of which may suffer from changes in the urban environment. In addition, the Nagatinskaya floodplain is an environmentally hazardous area [4] .
After the resignation of Yuri Luzhkov from the post of mayor of Moscow, the project was forgotten.
