Story
The film begins with the fact that an ordinary guy, our contemporary, a resident of Leningrad named Volodya (actor Gediminas Storpirstis ), quarrels with his wife. Then he goes out into the street ... and unexpectedly finds himself in Marseille , in 1928 , and in the body of the killer (according to the inspector Jimmy Simpkins who arrested him) Reginald Gatling.
Together they board the ship , which is supposed to take them to America, "closer to the electric chair ." But at night, for some reason, the ship crashes and drowns. The miraculously saved Volodya, Jimmy, as well as the charming passenger Vivian Kingman (actress Larisa Belogurova ) - a copy of Volodya's wife - are moving to the crashing place ... "The Flying Dutchman ", who continues to drift on the open sea. And then they fall into the island, lost in the Sargasso Sea , formed from the wreckage of half-sunken ships. The ruler of the island is Fergus Slayton ( Arunas Storpirstis ), his closest assistant is Sholom-Trepach ( Konstantin Raikin ). In addition to them, the island is inhabited by: wife Trepacha Maggie ( Natalia Lapina ), historian Luders with his wife Frida ( Lilian Malkina ) and many more sailors, travelers, and pirates. According to custom, the newcomer Vivian should choose one of the inhabitants of the island as her husband. Slayton, who himself laid eyes on her, locks Volodya and Jimmy into the punishment cell, but they manage to free themselves and catch the ceremony of choosing the groom. Vivian chooses Volodya as his husband, as he is in love with him. The islanders have a magnificent wedding. Then the wedding night comes and Volodya admits Vivian that he is already married and "has come from another world." But now he doesn’t care, he is in love with Vivian ... Meanwhile, Jimmy is watching Slayton. He notices the “tail” and is wary.
And the next morning, Jimmy accidentally wanders into the hold of an abandoned ship, where he discovers ... brother Slayton Edward, locked in a cage. He is clearly out of his mind. At this time, Slayton comes up. He tells Jimmy about his brother, as well as his relationship with Maggie. This conversation is heard by Trepach. He is shocked by the fact that his wife cheated on him. Meanwhile, Slayton leads Jimmy away, but Volodya appears. He frees Edward, but he, running around the island in a fit of insanity, dies. Meanwhile, Slayton shares with Jimmy his plans for the island: he wants to fly in a balloon, and then return for treasures. After that, Slayton pushes Jimmy into the water and shoots him in front of the inhabitants of the island. The trepach announces into the loudspeaker everything that he heard in the conversation between Jimmy and Slayton, and immediately gets a bullet in his forehead. Then Slayton out of revenge kills Vivian and escapes. They chase after him, but he manages to fly away in a balloon.
And Volodya suddenly reappears in his time. Judging by his ragged appearance, unshaven face and bump on the back of his head, he did not dream of everything that was happening. It ends with the fact that Volodya returns to his apartment and sits down to dinner with his wife, who is so similar to the deceased Vivian.
