Macroleter was found in 1984 by G. I. Tverdokhlebova and M. F. Ivakhnenko in the “ Middle Permian ” sediments of the Mezen , Pez and Kimzha rivers [1] . Type species - Macroleter poezicus was found in Ust-Pez, Mezen district, Arkhangelsk region [2] . Quite numerous of its remains were found in almost all localities of the Mezen fauna. It is part of the Mezen subcomplex, the same age-old Ocher fauna . This subcomplex apparently contains the fauna of calamite bogs. All animals included in this fauna are relatively small, semi-aquatic. Macroleter was a semi-terrestrial animal, similar in ecology to modern toads . A predatory animal, in particular, a macroleter, fed on juvenile proctolophones of niktifruret . The length of the skull is up to 10 cm, the total length is up to 60 cm. The skin of the macroleter could be relatively soft and permeable, the presence of skin glands (in particular, wetting the eardrum) is not excluded.

In 1980, E. Olson described the remains of a small reptile-morph from the “middle” Permian (Chikash Formation) of Oklahoma as Seymouria agilis . In 2001, R. Reis and M. Laurin re-studied this sample and established that it was a macro-starter ( M. agilis ). This is one of the few evidences of the continuity of the Permian faunas of North America and Eastern Europe . At the same time, the correct interpretation of this finding is disputed. This may be a representative of another kind of parareptile, only outwardly similar to tocosaurids .
