Gabinsky, Mark Alexandrovich

Mark Gabinsky was born in 1932 in Odessa in a Jewish medical family ^[1] . Mother came from the town of Fundukleevka of the Chigirinsky district of the Kiev province , father came from Steblev . Parents were forced to flee from their homes as a result of the pogroms of the Civil War period and met while studying at the Odessa Medical Institute , where his father subsequently worked as an assistant professor of human anatomy, and his mother in a cardiology clinic. During the war, his father, Alexander Mikhailovich Gabinsky (1898–?), Was called to the front as a second-rank medical doctor, chief of a medical unit in the anti-aircraft artillery battalion in the 1st Guards Cavalry Corps , and the family was evacuated on the ship "Abkhazia" in Gagra , then to the village of Beryozovka Semipalatinsk region , where the mother got a job as a doctor in a local sanatorium . In 1943, his father was transferred to the head of the military sanitary control point on Turksib and the family joined him in Semipalatinsk .

As a child, he independently studied Spanish , Italian and Portuguese . The family returned to Odessa on July 19, 1946. After graduating from the department of romance philology of the philological faculty of Leningrad University in 1953 he was sent to work at the Institute of History, Language and Literature of the Moldavian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. He also studied the Moldavian ( Romanian ) language on his own as a student. In total, M. Gabinsky mastered more than ten languages, including Albanian , Sephardic , Hebrew , Modern Greek , Macedonian and Aromun .

Since 1956 he participated in the compilation of a new Russian-Moldavian dictionary (published in 1961 ). In 1967 he defended his thesis on "The emergence of the infinitive as a secondary Balkan language process (Based on the material of the Albanian language)." In the same year, the monograph of the same name was published in the Leningrad branch of the Nauka publishing house. In 1972 he defended his doctoral dissertation “The Appearance and Loss of the Primary Albanian Infinitive (On the Problem of Infinitiveness in the Balkan Languages)”, based on the materials of his own monograph of the same name, published in the Leningrad branch of the Nauka publishing house in 1970 .

The author of approximately 260 scientific papers on various problems of the Balkan and Romance languages, as well as general linguistics. Already in 1967 , the first Soviet linguist published an article on the Sephardic (Hebrew-Spanish) language ("The rudiments of the loss of the infinitive in the Sephardic dialects of Macedonia ." Macedonian Cazic . Year XVIII. Skopјe , 1967). In 1992, M. Gabinsky’s book, Sephardic (Jewish-Spanish), was published . Balkan dialect ”, the first Russian monograph on Judezmo .

In 1988, he became a supporter of the movement for translating the Moldavian language into Latin script . In 2007, on the occasion of the scientist’s seventy-fifth anniversary in Chisinau , his new, monumental “Dictionary of the root etymological doublets of the Romanian language” (Dicţionar de rizodublete etimologice ale limbii române) was published.

He was a member of the editorial board of the magazines “Revistă de lingvistică şi ştiinţă literară” and “Buletinul Institutului de Lingvistică” (in Romanian).
