Tan Dun , also Tang Dong ( Chinese trad. 譚盾 , ex. 谭盾 , pinyin : Tán Dùn , born August 18, 1957 , Changsha ) is a Chinese and American composer .

Biography
During the years of the cultural revolution, he worked in the countryside, collecting rice. He independently mastered folk Chinese instruments. He worked as an arranger and performer for an erhu in the Wancheng troupe of the Beijing Opera . In 1978, he entered the Central Conservatory in Beijing, having passed the strictest selection (bachelor, 1983; master, 1985). He perceived modern academic music through lectures of the leading composers of that time invited to the conservatory of Gyor , Takeemitsu and other. Experienced the deep impact of Takemitsu music.
In 1986 he moved to New York with the assistance of Zhou Wenzhong, who contributed to Tang's scholarship. In 1993 he graduated from doctoral studies at Columbia University (composition class Zhou Wenzhong). In the USA, he discovered the music of John Cage and the minimalists .
In honor of the transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong to China on July 1, 1997 , the Tan Dong symphony was performed for solo cello ( Yo-Yo Ma ), symphony orchestra, children's choir and bells from the tomb of Marquis Yi .
In 2000, as a participant in a collective international project (together with S. A. Gubaidulina , O. Golikhov and V. Rome ), he commissioned the Bach Academy in Stuttgart and wrote Water Passion After St. Matthew .
In 2008, he took part in the YouTube project to create the world's first Internet symphony orchestra , for which Tan Dun wrote the Eroica Internet symphony .
