His teacher and then adviser was the cousin of Charlemagne, Adalgard of Corbia . On April 15, 781, he received from the father the Italian kingdom and a new name - Pepin, in honor of his grandfather .
In 791, Pepin made a successful campaign against the prince of Benevento Grimoald III to the south of Italy, having devastated part of the territory of the duchy . Later, Istria was annexed to the Frankish state.
The campaign was repeated in 793 , but was suspended due to starvation and death of horses.
In 796, Pepin was directed by his father against the Avars . Going up to the Danube , he became a camp there; The Avars, seeing such a huge army, killed their kagan and with new leaders appeared before Pepin, offering him land and power. But Pipin moved further east, destroyed the Ring (a fortified camp, the Avar “capital") and took possession of a large booty.
In the years 809-810 he conducted military operations against Venice , during which he besieged the islands of the lagoon for six months.
He died in Milan on July 8, 810.
