The list of objects of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Australian Union includes 19 items (for 2012 ), which is 1.7% of the total number (1121 for 2019).
2 objects are included in the list according to cultural criteria, 12 objects - according to natural, 5 - according to mixed ones. 2 cultural objects are recognized as masterpieces of human genius ( criterion i) and 9 objects are recognized as natural phenomena of exceptional beauty and aesthetic importance (criterion vii).
In addition, as of 2016, 2 properties in Australia are among the candidates for inclusion in the World Heritage List. [1] Australia ratified the Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage on 22 August 1974. [2] The first sites in Australia were listed in 1981 at the 5th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. Australia's first listed site, the Great Barrier Reef , also became UNESCO's first marine World Heritage Site. [3]
