Reviews
The writer Alexander Goldstein noted:
Where Kharitonov - sensual-emotional, in a word decorated state of the body, such as love, longing, loneliness; where he works in the first verbal-somatic plane, without a role distance in relation to the topic and agent of the utterance, there Ilyanen, trembling from the deposited, partly parody traces of confessional blueness, knows only free from psycho-thematic dependence, closed by the boundaries of an autonomous representation, facing himself tongue. Language no longer means matter of lust, longing, or obsession, but codified language emblems of these states, from which, again, the tongue emerges in the course of the story - the snake bites its tail. [9]
The poet and critic Alexander Skidan described the prose of Ilyanen in this way:
Ilyanen will lower words by means of their fluctuating signs, consonances, inflections. A verbal eventless canvas is filed with diary cursive writing, particulars, sparkles of phonemes, false biographical and literary genealogies. So they glance with a walking gaze past the colonial shop windows, taking communion of their miraculous fetishes, copies, and sculptures. Actually, the whole novel, starting with the title, is such a showcase, where the author, convicted of Ekivok's spasm, vainly unravels himself in parts, like an alien speech, like a “sweet name of a skald”, folded and pronounced as his own.
