Kasabian

Kasabian ( IPA: [kəˈseɪbiən] ) is a British rock band formed in 1997 in Leicester . The band initially included vocalist Tom Meigan , guitarist and vocalist Sergio Pizzorno , guitarist Chris Karloff and bassist Chris Edwards . After the band worked with several session drummers in 2004, drummer Ian Matthews joined Kasabian. In 2006, Karloff left the band and founded a new band called Black Onassis. In 2006, Jay Meler joined the group. In 2013, Meler left Kasabian for Liam Gallagher's Beady Eye band and was replaced by Tim Carter. In 2010 and 2014, Kasabian won the Q Awards in the Best Contemporary Group nomination, as well as the Q Awards in the Best Live Performance nomination in 2014 and the NME Awards in the Best Concert Group nomination in 2007. Kasabian's style is often defined as indie rock , but Pizzorno said that he hates indie bands and does not believe that Kasabian music can be attributed to this genre [1] .

Group History

The Early Years (1997-2002)

The band was formerly called Saracuse and began recording music at Bedrock Studios in Leicester, where Chris Edwards worked as an engineer. All the original members of the collective came from and , and the group formed during a visit to Pizstorno, Meigan and Edwards [5] [6] [7] . The recording of the debut EP Kasabian was produced by Scott Gilbert, and it was transferred to the group on December 24, 1998. Three songs were recorded live: “What's Going On,” “Life of Luxury,” and “Shine On.” Kasabian's first public appearance was at the Vipers Rugby Club in honor of celebrating the eighteenth birthday of Edwards with his family and friends. [8] Then the group, with the help of London DJ and producer Sam Young, signed a contract with BMG , after which the band members changed its name to Kasabian by the name of , a member of the Family commune, Charles Manson . In an interview with bassist Chris Edwards explained how former guitarist Chris Karloff chose the name. When Karloff read about Charles Manson, the name Caseibian cut into his memory. “He just thought that the word was cool, and literally within a minute after the rest of us heard this ... the decision was made,” Edwards said [9] . Kaseibian (Kasabyan) is a typical Armenian surname derived from the dialect Armenian word ղասաբ (ġasab), derived from the Arabic word قصّاب (qaṣṣāb), which translates as “butcher” or “executioner”, and common among Armenian surnames ending in -yan , indicating affiliation to the family. Sam Young worked for a small independent label, Concept Music, and the band manager presented him with a Saracuse demo. Concept wanted to sign a contract with the team, and the agreement was signed, but Sam took on managerial duties and immediately signed a contract with BMG, because he had an old friend Darren Dixon, who had recently started working in the label department to find and promote new artists ( English A&R ). EMI was also interested in collaborating with the group. Subsequently, the members of the group quarreled with Sam Young. According to Young, they never thanked him or were not grateful for what he did, changing their life forever.

Kasabian (2003-2005)

Their self-titled debut album was released on September 13, 2004 in the UK, sold well and received generally positive reviews from critics [10] . At the time of recording, the band members lived in a farmhouse near Rutland Water to focus entirely on work [11] . In 2005, Kasabian performed at the Glastonbury Festival on the Additional Stage (Other Stage) [12] .

Despite the earlier release of two other singles - “ Processed Beats ” and “ Reason Is Treason ”, it was the release of the third single “ Club Foot ” that led Kasabian to success in the UK Singles Chart [13] . It was written in the early years of Kasabian and continued to enjoy both critics' success and commercial success. “Club Foot” has become one of the group’s most loved songs by the public, and since its release it has been performed at almost all the band’s live performances.

Various drummers played with Kasabian during this period, including current keyboard player , DJ Dan Ralph Martin, brothers Mitch and Ryan Glovers and others. While recording in Bristol, the band met , who participated in the recordings of “ Processed Beats ”, “Butcher Blues”, “Beneficial Herbs” and, probably, other songs from the debut album and other compositions. In 2004, he was invited to join the tour, and in April 2005, Matthews became a regular member of the group. The album was produced by .

Empire and the departure of Karloff (2006-2007)

During the recording of Kasabian’s second album, Empire , one of the main songwriters Christopher Karloff, according to the band’s website, had creative disagreements with other members of the band and was asked to leave [14] . At the same time, there is reason to believe that Christopher left the group due to personal circumstances. He participated in the recording of three songs from the album Empire .

Work on Empire was carried out jointly with Jim Abbiss, he was released in the UK on August 28, 2006. " " was published as the first single of the album and took ninth place in the UK Singles Chart , the single "Shoot the Runner" took seventeenth position in the same charts. The third single, " ", was released on January 2, 2007.

In 2007, at the NME Awards ceremony, Kasabian received an award in the nomination "Best Concert Band" [15] .
