Cry of Stone ( German: Cerro Torre: Schrei aus Stein ) is a film directed by Werner Herzog , which tells of climbing the unexposed peak of Cerro Torre in Los Glaciares National Park ( Chile ). Like many other films of the director, “Scream of Stone” was filmed in difficult natural conditions, in bad weather, close to the top of this picturesque granite peak.

The meaning of the German name can be conveyed more precisely: "Cerro Torre: a cry frozen in the form of a stone."
One of the main characters was played by Stefan Glovac - a famous climber and climber. The idea of the film itself was presented to Werner Herzog by the famous Italian mountaineer Reinhold Messner .
Content
Story
At the center of the story are two climbers ( Vittorio Mezzogorno and Stefan Glovac ). Both are trying to get the favor of the same woman (Matilda May). In addition, everyone dreams of being the first to conquer the treacherous ice mountain Cerro Torre on the border of Argentina and Chile. According to the plot, none of the famous climbers can climb there. In the final of the film, both protagonists scramble to the top from opposite sides, while one dies, and the second discovers that the peak has already been conquered before him. The tragicomicism of the situation lies in the fact that the record belongs to a crazy tramp, whom everyone knew, but no one took seriously. Here the philosophical background of history is revealed. Both could not keep love, because it was not their main value for them, as a result - the mountain did not give them what they aspired to. The summit obeyed the one who, without hesitation, gave everything he had for love. The Tramp nicknamed "Bespaly" (Brad Durif) - Don Quixote, who defeated the windmill.
A characteristic feature of Werner Herzog's films is dizzying landscapes. Nature is an important actor in all events. The mighty element is a kind of arbiter or God, who watches people from above and makes his own corrections.

Reaction
Although Scream of Stone won Golden Ozella and Pasinetti awards for best acting (Vittorio Mezzogiorno) at the IFF in Venice , Herzog was unhappy with the script (which this time was not written by himself) and subsequently stated that he didn’t considers this film "his".
