Erofeev, Viktor Vladimirovich

The son of a Soviet diplomat Vladimir Ivanovich Erofeev . According to the writer himself, Alexander Popov accounts for his great-grandfather ^{[3] [4]} . This fact, however, is not confirmed ^{[5] [6]} . Also among his relatives, he mentions Dmitri Mendeleev , whom Alexander Stepanovich’s daughter allegedly married (in fact, Mendeleev’s wife was called Anna Ivanovna Popova, she was the daughter of Don Cossack from the village of Uryupinskaya. Anna Ivanovna was younger than Alexander Stepanovich Popova only by year and could not be his daughter) ^[7] .

Part of his childhood spent with his parents in Paris .

In 1970 he graduated from the philological faculty of Moscow State University , in 1973 - a postgraduate study at the Institute of World Literature . In 1975 he defended his thesis on " Dostoevsky and French existentialism ."

Received fame after publishing an essay about the work of the Marquis de Sade in the journal Issues of Literature .

In 1979, he was expelled from the Writers' Union for organizing an uncensored almanac Metropol in the samizdat .

According to Victor Yerofeyev's story “Life with an idiot,” composer Alfred Schnittke wrote an opera , which premiered in Amsterdam in 1992. In 1993, according to the same story, the eponymous film was made (director Alexander Rogozhkin ).

Viktor Yerofeyev is a member of the Russian PEN Center . Winner of the V. V. Nabokov Prize (1992), holder of the French Order of Arts and Literature (2006) and the Order of the Legion of Honor (2013) ^[8] .

From February 1998 to August 2011 - the author and presenter of the TV program "Apocrypha" (the TV channel "Culture" ). Victor Erofeev about the program:

From 2003 to May 2011, he conducted the program “Encyclopedia of the Russian Soul” on Radio Liberty .

In 2008, he took part in the reality show “ The Last Hero ”, where, refusing to jump into the sea from the ship on the first day, he left with Nikita Dzhigurda with a scandal ^{[9] [10] [11]} .

In January 2014, he took part in the scandalous air of the program “Dilettantes” on the TV channel “Rain” , where he said that Leningrad had to be handed over to German troops to save lives ^{[12] [13] [14]} .

In 1996 and 2003, he was among cultural and scientific workers who called on the Russian authorities to stop the war in Chechnya and move on to the negotiation process ^{[15] [16]} .

In March 2014, together with a number of prominent figures of science and culture of Russia, he signed an anti-war appeal by an initiative group to hold the Congress of Intellectuals “Against the war, against self-isolation of Russia, against the restoration of totalitarianism” ^[17] .

In March 2009, a group of citizens, later supported by the Movement Against Illegal Immigration , appealed to the prosecutor's office with a request to check the text of Yerofeev’s book “Encyclopedia of the Russian Soul” for the presence of elements of extremism and incitement of national hatred ^[18] . The statement quoted fragments from the book, which, according to the applicants, are Russophobic . In particular:

Russian need to beat a stick.
Russian need to shoot.
Russian need to smear on the wall.

Otherwise, they will cease to be Russian

DPNI leader Alexander Belov , endorsing the initiative of his comrades, said: “We must learn from the Jews and other small nations to protect our rights” ^{[19] [20]} . Yerofeyev himself stated that the text of the book should not be interpreted as his position ^{[21] [22] [23]} , Vladimir Sorokin ardently defended the writer ^[24] , moreover, Yerofeyev said that he doesn’t represent what Russophobia is ^[25] . According to him, “ ... here is an ordinary misunderstanding, a philological error. The positions of the author and his character are confused. In my book, the adventures of the Russian intellectual who go mad and begin to revile the authorities, our people, the West and the East are described ” ^[3] .

In December 2010, Viktor Yerofeyev signed an open letter to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev calling for the adoption of amendments to Part IV of the Civil Code , allowing libraries and educational institutions to digitize books without the consent of the copyright holders and free inter-library exchange of the received digital copies. The authors of the letter believe that “some of the amendments, which are generally progressive for the development of copyright in Russia, by their inaccuracy and vagueness of formulations give loopholes to pirates , override the very concept of the e-book market and open up virtually unlimited scope for piracy” ^[26] .
