Biography
In 1709, Farina founded the manufactory in Cologne, today the oldest perfumery company in the world. Farina calls her perfume in honor of her new homeland, the city of Cologne: cologne ( fr. Eau de Cologne - “Cologne water”)
Cologne becomes a world-famous city of perfumers: in the 18th century , Cologne Water is ordered by the high society of all Europe. The Prussian King Frederick II presents the cologne as a gift to the Russian Tsarina Catherine II ; later, Tsar Alexander I also buys cologne.
“My fragrance resembles a spring morning in Italy after rain, oranges, lemons, grapefruit, bergamot, zedrat, flowers and herbs of my homeland,” writes I.M. Farina in a letter to her brother in 1708.
According to Voltaire , Farina's cologne promotes inspiration. Goethe mentions cologne in the tragedy Faust . The heirs of Farina become the suppliers of the court of the English Queen Victoria ; most of the monarchs of Europe follow her example (more than 50 titles of yard suppliers are stored in the archive).
Cologne honors the memory of the famous perfumer : a statue of I.M. Farina adorns the tower of the city hall.
Today, the centuries-old history of the cologne continues the descendant of Farina in the eighth generation, whose name is also Johann Maria.
