Biography
The life and work of Vladimir Makogonov is connected mainly with Baku. In the 1923 City Championship, he shared 1-2 places with his brother Mikhail , then won the tournament several times. Five times (in 1947-1952) became the champion of the Azerbaijan SSR .
Mathematic teacher. He was friends with L. Landau, although he rejected his proposal to work together, for the sake of chess. Chess theorist, author of debut developments in the Queen's Gambit , the Grünfeld Defense , the King's Indian Defense . He was engaged in coaching: he worked with Vasily Smyslov in preparing for the world championship match in 1957 , coached Vladimir Bagirov , worked for some time with young Garry Kasparov .
Master of Sports of the USSR since 1927, international master since 1950, awarded the title of honorary grandmaster in 1987 for previous achievements. Honored Master of Sports of the USSR (1943).
