Biography

From 1491, Garofalo was in Ferrara to study at Domenico Panetti , and in 1498 he set off on a journey, which led him to Cremona in the workshop of Boccaccio Boccaccini . In January 1499 he secretly left his teacher and went to Rome , where he worked with Florentine Giovanni Baldini . In 1501 he moved to Bologna , where he worked for two years in the workshop of Lorenzo Costa , then returned to Ferrara in 1504 and worked for some time with the Dossi brothers.

In 1509 , he made his second move to Rome, where Benvenuto Tisi worked with Raphael , trying to bring the Lombard style closer to the Raphael style. In 1512 , Tizi returned to his hometown, where he carried out numerous orders of the Duke Alfons. In 1531, Tizi went blind in one eye. Fearing to go completely blind, he made a vow to work for free, including weekends, on frescoes and paintings for the Ferrara Bernardine monastery. After which he worked for another twenty years, until he finally lost his sight in 1550 . Murals are not preserved.

His famous student was Girolamo da Carpi .

Garofalo Paintings in Russia

In Russia, Garofalo was highly appreciated since 1720 , when Peter Beklemishev (he was the diplomatic representative of Peter I in Italy) presented his "Position in the Tomb" to Peter I as the work of the "glorious and ancient autro named Rafael D` Urbino" [8] .

Eight paintings of Raphael of Ferrara (Raphael in composition) impoverished monastery in 1792 sold to Pope Pius VI. Half a century later, Nicholas I bought half of them [9] . Four paintings of Garofalo were acquired for the Hermitage : “ Marriage in Cana of Galilee ”; “ Allegory of the Old and New Testaments ”, “ Carrying the Cross ” and “ Miracle of Bread and Fishes ”. The latter, in 1931 , was transferred to the newly organized Far Eastern Art Museum of Khabarovsk [10] .
