Biography

Agostino was about to become a jeweler, but succumbed to the entreaties of his cousin Lodovico Carracci and became an artist. Lodovico had a great influence on the formation of Agostino as an artist. In addition, he studied painting with Prospero Fontana , Bartolomeo Passarotti and Domenico Tibaldi , traveled to Lombardy and traveled to Venice . Possessing a great degree of well-readness, he led lectures on the theory of art organized by the Carracci brothers, “ Academies that have taken the right path ” ( Italian: Academia degli Incamminati ). His few paintings (the best of them are frescoes in the Palazzo Farnese in Rome , executed with his brother Annibale, "Communion of St. Jerome" and "Ascension of the Virgin" in the Bologna Pinakothek ) are distinguished by the correctness of the picture and the bright, cheerful color.

Agostino was a more famous engraver than his brother Annibale. Imitating Cornelis Cort , he reached great heights in the skill of engraving. The most famous of his engravings: “The Crucifixion” (with Tintoretto , 1589), “ Aeneas and Anchis ” (with Barochchio , 1595), “The Virgin and Child” (with Correggio ), “The Temptation of St. Anthony ” , “ St. Jerome ” (with Tintoretto), as well as some engravings from his own works. Agostino Carracci gained fame for his engravings of an erotic content, illustrating the so-called " Poses " of Aretino .
