Maria Dobronega

Maria Dobronega (also sometimes referred to as Dobrogneva ; 1011 [2] or not earlier than 1012 [3] - 1087 ) - Princess of Kiev , presumably the daughter of St. Vladimir . It is not known exactly who her mother was. According to the date of marriage, it can be assumed that she is most likely the daughter of Vladimir from her marriage to Anna of Byzantium [4] (d. 1011) or from her last marriage, which is mentioned by Titmar of Merseburg [5] .

Biography

Probably, in 1018, together with her sisters, she was a captive of the Polish king Boleslav I , who helped her brother Svyatopolk take Kiev away from another brother Yaroslav . After a quarrel with Svyatopolk, Boleslav went to Poland, taking with him the sisters of Yaroslav, among them most likely was Mary. The Polish scientist G. Lyabuda suggested that the king ordered the construction of a Byzantine-style palace for the captives in a secluded place on Lednice Island, with a house church (that is, women were not forced to convert to Catholicism). The opinion of Lyabuda was confirmed by archaeological excavations. Russian women lived there at least until the death of Boleslav, that is, until 1025 [6] .

In 1038 or 1042, Yaroslav the Wise married her to the Polish prince Casimir the Restorer . Only after this wedding did the Russian people captured by Boleslav in 1018 gain freedom [6] .

Casimir died on November 28, 1058.

They had four sons and a daughter:

  • Boleslav (1042-1081), the prince of Poland in 1058-1076 and the king in 1076-1079, during the first years of the reign of Boleslav the Bold, Maria Dobronega retained significant influence on her son;
  • Vladislav German (1043–1102), Prince of Poland in 1080–1102;
  • Bag (04/16/1045 - 12/06/1065);
  • Otton (1047-1048);
  • Svyatoslav (1044-1126), from 1062/1063 the princess, and then the Queen of the Czech Republic , the wife of Vratislav II (1035-1092).
