History
Island view
For a long time there was a monastery in the fortress on the island, then a prison, but by order of Napoleon I the island was transformed in 1807 into an exceptional place for the burial of the Venetians. The cemetery has three departments: Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant. The main attraction of the island is the church of San Michele in Isola , built in 1469 by the project of Mauro Coducci , one of the very first examples of Renaissance architecture in Venice.
