History

Etymology

The city of Shelekhov is named after the Russian Columbus, a traveler, explorer, navigator, merchant and founder of the Russian-American company Grigory Ivanovich Shelikhov . At the same time, the name of the city is written Shel ehov, and the surname is often used as Shel and hov. This is due to the fact that there is no consensus on the correct spelling of the surname. Grigory Ivanovich himself signed the documents in both versions.

1953-1961

The foundation date for the city of Shelekhov is May 1953 , when the first six tents were erected by the builders of the Irkutsk Aluminum Plant , employees of the Irkutskalyuminstroy Trust (IAS). However, more often this year is used as the first mention of a settlement, since then the village was called the abbreviation of the plant - IrkAZ. According to Giprogor , it was planned to create a city with a population of 100,000 people [3] . The first inhabitants of the workers' village were people from the villages of Olha , Markov , Vvedenskaya , the village of Big Meadow . In memory of the first builders, a memorial “First Tent” was erected near the factory building. This building is a monument of reinforced concrete in the form of a tent.

On March 30, 1954, a commission of builders accepted temporary use of residential buildings of the K-7 type. In the fall, a film installation began to work, which scrolled up to 16 films a week [4] . In October, the first 10 Komsomol members arrived at the construction of IrkAZ. By the end of the year, 2,148 m² of living space were commissioned; the first quarter of the future city was laid [5] .

Initially, the location of residential buildings was on a quarterly basis. Currently, the city is represented by several blocks and microdistricts. The city also has many horticultural partnerships.

The first kindergarten was opened on September 15, 1955 , and in December the construction site and the village received constant electric lighting from the power grid.

January 25, 1956, the village of builders of IrkAZ gets the name "working village Shelekhov" [6] . Two months later, elections were held in the Shelekhovsky village council of workers' deputies .

On the night of June 16-17, 1956, the first batch of Komsomol members from Orel arrives at the workers' settlement.

1962-1990

January 27, 1962 Shelekhov received the status of a city. The city was actively landscaping, each year 30-35 thousand m2 of housing was introduced. About 30 times the city of Shelekhov was awarded the first place in the All-Russian competitions for the best work on the improvement and sanitary maintenance of the city. [7]
