Description
Wikitravel uses free software MediaWiki - the same used by Wikipedia and other projects of the WikiMedia Foundation [2] .
According to Time magazine, the Wikitravel project was named one of the top 50 websites of 2008 [3] .
Wikitravel supports a different ideology from the encyclopedic, which is often unusual for new participants. Navigation in the project is carried out not by category, but by geographic hierarchy by special navigation lanes. Articles have a clearly defined structure defined by the template sets. The titles of sections of the articles have a verb form, this is a special "highlight". There is a rule of 7 ± 2, which says that you should not list all known objects (encyclopedic approach), for example, cities of the region, but you should select from 5 to 9, optimally 7, the most interesting objects for tourists. The number of hyperlinks is limited, their use is advisable if the reference object is important for a particular journey (a simple criterion is the answer to the question whether it is possible to spend the night there). It is allowed to express one's own point of view in a neutral manner, for example, on the quality of service in a particular hotel.
Wikitravel is presented in 21 language versions. For interlanguage development of the project, there is a common file repository of Wikitravel Shared (analogue of Commons in Wikipedia), a section for blogs and travel descriptions in the free form Wikitravel Extra is being developed.
History
The Wikitravel project was created in July 2003 by spouses Evan Prodromou and Michelle Ann Jenkins Prodromou.
On April 20, 2006, it was announced that Wikitravel, as well as the World66 project, was acquired by Internet Brands. In December 2006, many participants of the German version of Wikitravel fork , and called their project Wikivoyage. Later, they were joined by participants who created the Italian version of Wikivoyage.
On April 1, 2008, Internet Brands included advertisements from Google on the project’s pages.
Since the beginning of 2012, a group of administrators of the English-language section, concerned about the Internet Brands policy in the area of increasing the advertising load on the project, as well as the lack of adequate technical support for the web-resources of the project, has begun to move towards another fork. Fork allowed to reunite with the Wikivoyage project and implement a possible transition of the project to WMF. In response, Internet Brand began the prosecution of two notable project participants. WMF filed a counterclaim, and only in February 2013, the claim of Internet Brands was withdrawn.
Since November 10, 2012, the reunited project Wikivoyage (the Russian name is Wikigid ) has been hosted on the servers of the Wikimedia Foundation and is one of the projects of the Foundation [4] .
