Biography
Taddeo Gaddi studied with his father, the artist Gaddo Gaddi , later worked with Giotto di Bondone [1] , and from about 1330 he became an independent artist in Florence.
Gaddy, according to Vasari , “remained one of the first in this art, judging by his judiciousness and talent, surpassing all his associates” [2] . He entered the corporation of doctors and pharmacists in 1330 [3] . In 1347, he was mentioned at the head of the list of the best artists of Florence. The attributions of Gaddy’s works are based on a comparison with two paintings he signed: the Berlin triptych ( Berlin Picture Gallery , inventory number 1079-1081, 1334) and the Madonna and Child (Florence, Uffizi , inventory number 3, 1355). Many of the works of Gaddy, which are reported mainly by Vasari, are now lost [3] .
Among his works, one of the most significant is the cycle of frescoes “The History of the Virgin Mary ” in the Chapel of the Baroncelli of the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence (1328–1338) [4] . Some time later, he painted panels [5] for the sacristy of the same church, now they are divided between the Academy Gallery in Florence and museums in Munich (Prova del Fuoco, la Morte del cavaliere di Celano, Old Pinacoteca ) and Berlin (Pentecoste e Resurrezione del fanciullo, Berlin Picture Gallery ). The late period of his work includes the frescoes “The Last Supper” and “The Tree of Life” in the refectory of Santa Croce .
According to some art historians, he took part in the work on Stephaneschi 's Polyptych ( Rome , Vatican Pinacoteca ). Other works by Taddeo Gaddi: “Madonna” ( Berne ), “Adoration of the Magi” ( Dijon ), “History of Job” ( Pisa , Camposanto ), “ Madonna and Child with Angels and Saints ” (Florence, Uffizi), “Madonna, Wearing womb ”( Italian: Madonna del Parto , Florence), a polyptych from the Church of St. Felicata (Florence). Vasari also reports that Taddeo Gaddi was entrusted with the restoration of Ponte Vecchio , however, today this statement is being questioned by researchers who believe that the work was entrusted to Neri di Fioravante .
In his works, Gaddy portrayed complex architectural motifs and was one of the first to show interest in portraying lighting effects.
The artist was the son of Taddeo Gaddi - Agnolo Gaddi .
