History
Group formation (1996–1997)
The idea of creating a musical project came from Jay Gordon , who previously worked on producing the eponymous album of the Coal Chamber group [5] , and Ryan Shack , who played in the hard rock band Sexart with Jonathan Davis . Soon, Paige Haley , Amir Derak , Bobby Hewitt joined the musicians, and in 1997 the group finally formed [6] . The group was called “Orgy”, but the musicians claimed that it does not carry sexual implications and points to a jumble of musical styles used in their work [7] . Six months after the formation, Orgy began working with the Elementree Records label owned by the nu-metal band Korn [7] .
Candyass and Vapor Transmission (1998–2000)
After a series of performances in Los Angeles clubs, Orgy signed a contract with Reprise Records and began recording their studio debut album . August 18, 1998 plate called Candyass , went on sale. The album was well received by the public; Candyass ranked 32 on the Billboard 200 [8] and ranked 1 on Top Heatseekers [9] . In addition, the disc was recognized as platinum [10] , and the cover version of the song “ Blue Monday ” by New Order , included in the album and released as a single , became a real breakthrough hit for Orgy . The composition ranked high on the charts of several countries, often sounded on alternative rock radio stations, and the video clip was regularly broadcast on MTV [11] [12] . Band member Paige Haley responded to the band’s sudden popularity as follows:
All of our songs are a little crazy, but you can still hear them on the radio. Do not look for a lot of sense in them. Original Text (Eng.) “Our songs are all just slightly deranged, but I can definitely hear them on the radio. Don't look for any more meaning than that ” [7] . |
In support of Candyass Orgy, they conducted a tour, the first concert of which was held at the EdgeFest festival in Tulsa , Oklahoma . The musicians also took part in the Family Values Tour 1998 , which also included Korn , Limp Bizkit , Ice Cube , Incubus and Rammstein [13] .
The release of the second studio album of the Vapor Transmission group took place on October 10, 2000 . The record was favorably received by music reviewers [14] and also had commercial success. Vapor Transmission was placed on the 16th line of the Billboard 200 [8] , and after some time was awarded the gold status [10] . With Vapor Transmission , four singles were released, among which the most successful were “Fiction (Dreams in Digital)” and “Opticon” [15] .
In November 2000, the group started the second concert tour, which lasted until March 2001 [16] . As part of this tour, the musicians performed at several music festivals and conducted a series of joint tours with Papa Roach [16] .
Punk Statik Paranoia and Break (2001–2005)
In September 2001, Orgy recorded and released the song “Faces” specifically for the soundtrack for the movie Exemplary Male . In 2002, Jay Gordon creates a remix of “Points of Authority” by Linkin Park for their remix album Reanimation . The track was renamed Pts.OF.Athrty and released as a single on March 20, 2002.
The team left Reprise, thereby starting a closer work with Elementree Records. But soon, Jay Gordon organizes his own independent label D1 Music [6] , after which the group began work on a third studio album. The record was extremely tense [17] . Due to frequent conflicts, Ryan Shack and Amir Derak practically ceased to participate in the work on the album, and focused on their musical project Julien-K [17] .
In 2003, the recording was over. Before the release of the disc, the site www.punkstatikparanoia.com was launched, and on February 24, 2004 , the album was released, called Punk Statik Paranoia . The disc ranked 11th in the Top Independent Albums chart [18] . Punk Statik Paranoia could not surpass the success of previous albums. The low sales of the plate were affected by the lack of promotion and a musical style that was somewhat different from the group's early work [2] .
After conducting a small concert tour and releasing the single “Pure” on August 23, 2005 and the video album Trans Global Spectacle , Orgy announced that it had ceased any activity in favor of third-party projects. In this case, the musicians said that the group officially remains active.
Renewal of activities with new staff (2008 - present)
In July 2008, Ryan Schack announced the possible return of the group. But this did not happen, as he and Amir Derak fully focused on working with Julien-K and Dead by Sunrise . In the fall of 2010, it became known that Shaq and Derak would not continue to work in Orgy. Bobby Hewitt and Paige Haley said they also did not intend to return to the lineup. Soon Jay Gordon announced the involvement of other participants in the team [19] .
In early 2012, the group began an active concert activity [20] , and in September 2012, the single “Grime of the Century” was released. In 2013, the team conducted a tour, called the Wide Awake and Dead Tour [21] . On February 23, 2014, the single “Wide Awake and Dead” was released. On April 22, a video was recorded for this song [22] .
On March 23, 2015, the band released their first EP album , called Talk Sick . Another EP was also announced - Entropy , but there is currently no detailed information about it [23] .

Musical critics, as a rule, refer Orgy to synth-rock , industrial-rock , industrial-metal [24] and alternative metal [24] . In addition, the effects of a synth-pop and a new wave can be traced [25] . The third studio album, Punk Statik Paranoia, is stylistically closer to nu-metal [2] [4] . Talk Sick 's first EP album is close to dance rock in performance, and is more like Julien-K . The band members themselves call their style " death - pop " [16] .
The lyrics of the debut album Orgy Candyass were characterized by Jay Gordon as “ bullshit ... bullshit and fairy tales ” [7] . The lyrical thrust of the Vapor Transmission , the second record of the collective, was to science fiction [16] . The lyrics of the compositions of Punk Statik Paranoia are devoted to the topic of depression , paranoia and unrequited love [26] . According to the booklet attached to the album, Punk Statik Paranoia is dedicated to Charles Gordon, father of Jay Gordon, who died during the recording period [27] .
